Robert Anderson Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin United States Bio: Wisconsin-based artist Robert Anderson works in steel. He created his first large garden kaleidoscope with one optical viewing teleidoscope in the later part of the 1990's. Over the past twenty-five years he refined the designs to include additional teleidoscopes mounted at different levels to accommodate viewers of varying stature. Robert's garden kaleidoscopes reside in more than 100 public spaces including, but not limited to, botanical gardens, museums, hospitals, libraries, churches, schools, parks, and hotel resorts and spas. Robert's garden kaleidoscopes are also found in hundreds of corporate and private collections worldwide.
Philosophy:
  The inspiration for my work comes from observations of the natural world. I am intrigued with seed pods, characteristics and life cycles of trees and other plant life, land formations, and the natural beauty of flowering plants. I enjoy melding ideas rooted in the natural world with the industrial strength and beauty of raw materials to create interactive living sculptures with a universal connection.

Description: This garden kaleidoscope is inspired by trees and the natural cycle of new growth from year to year. The scope holders represent the strength of the roots. The center bowl rotates and there is a drain built-in through the center. Three optical teleidoscopes are mounted at different levels on the sculpture to accommodate viewers of varying stature. Henry Bergeson Conifer, Colorado, United States Bio: I started out in the early 1980's as a mechanical engineer working to design and install modern sailing rigs on cargo ships. From there I worked at a place that designed and refined medical equipment. It was there that I discovered modern kaleidoscopes in a gallery near where I ate lunch. I thought to myself, "I could make these." Four months later I was laid off. This was in 1987 and it was time to go somewhere else, so I moved from Boston to Colorado. I have been making kaleidoscopes in one form or another ever since.

Description: The CordaLee, a handmade kaleidoscope by Henry Bergeson is a kaleidoscope that will engage you completely. It is named for Corki Weeks who helped Henry get started making scopes back in 1987.(Time is going by it seems!!) CordaLee was her given name. She was the preeminent scope maker of the time and there probably isn’t a collection out there that doesn’t include some of her pieces.
This kaleidoscope incorporates may features within its flowing form. It is equipped with three interchangeable brass trimmed object cases that can be switched by simply pulling the magnetically held case out out the scope. Then you simply slide another one in and away you go on another visual journey. In addition, the kaleidoscope has its own internal led light source powered by three AAA batteries. You push the brass button at the front of the scope and you will have light. The light is on a timer and will shut off automatically after about a minute. The batteries are easily accessed via a compartment on the underside of the scope. All of the wood components are processed through a 25 step sanding and finishing process and all of the solid brass components are brought to a mirror finish. This produces a piece that is stunning to look at as well as to look through.

Ben Birdsill Billings, Montana, United States Bio: I have been fascinated by kaleidoscopes my whole life. After a crude attempt at building one as a change of pace from making furniture, I was hooked. When I decided to get serious and step up my craft, I drew from my woodworking background to make my scopes. The two things I like most about making kaleidoscopes are the combining of the multiple disciplines needed in their construction, and the first time I get to look through my latest creation.

Allison Borgschulte Lincoln, Nebraska, United States Bio: Allison Borgschulte studied fine art at the Kansas City Art Institute in the Fiber Art Department. After college, she was employed in a fiber art & design studio in Bonner Springs, Kansas. It was in Bonner Springs where she met owner of the Moon Marble Company, Bruce Breslow, and began working for the Moon as their graphic and web designer. Exposed to many talented glass artists, she couldn't resist the draw to take up the medium herself and began taking classes in stained glass and later in glass fusing. Allison actively pursues her work in fiber art, glass art, and kaleidoscope making maintaining a balance in all areas. Her weavings and stained glass panels are primarily nature inspired, while her work in kaleidoscopes is inspired by her observations through the kaleidoscopes themselves.
Philosophy:
  Along with being an artist, I am an art collector. One medium in which I collect, and for which I have great appreciation, is the work of contemporary handmade marble makers. I also find it very beneficial to collaborate with other artists. Artists within a particular medium have a tendency towards a certain approach that is natural to the techniques they employ. Collaborating with someone whose focus is on another way of working opens both persons' horizons and allows for innovative crossovers of the mediums. I find it especially rewarding to meet new marble makers who are eager to experience their work in a whole new way through their perspective of my work.

Description: The air trap design inside this contemporary handmade marble reminded me of a henna design and how when henna tattoos are applied the dye sits with a raised texture on the skin while it processes. Inspired by this, I created a design on the outside of the kaleidoscope that is reminiscent of the color, pattern, and texture of henna.  

David Branch El Paso, Texas, United States Bio: I have been turning wood for over 40 years and found the fun and creativity of kaleidoscopes some 10 years ago. I very much enjoy designing and making all of the components from the turned wood body to acrylic cell sculpture and glass components. Every one of my scopes are unique and "one of a kind". I find joy and a challange in combining wood, acrylic, metal, oil and glass together; both the chemistry and physics of glueing; to smooth movement of interior bearings and bushings; to oil movement with custom made glass. I like working with exotic woods and custom made finishes. I use my kaleidoscope studio to teach my grandkids the joy and practical use of chemistry, physics and geometry. Then there's the rewarding sound of the "wow" when my scopes are viewed.
Philosophy:
  Incorporating the cylindrical coordinates allowed by a lathe provides a series of key insights and moments of discovery. As it is in the beauty and misleading simplicity of shapes themselves, like a snowflake, the most intricate beauty can be conveyed by simple symmetrical shapes with an underlying complexity. The human eye judges beauty by this combination of symmetry and the complexity that satisfies the eye while challenging the mind.

When the scope is tilted horozontially the sphere moves along the tower to create a surprise depth and movement. The image cell contains custom glass lamp work and dichroic glass. The image cell is oil filled with a three step acrylic lens made to refract the light to the cell. The base contains a 72 note Swiss music box that plays 3 different movements of (To be added). The stand is made of Brazilian Rosewood (Dalbergia ingra), Spalted Bigleaf Maple (Acer macrophyllum) and acrylic. The movement of the object cell incorporates a custom aluminium bushing to support ball bearings for very smooth rotation. The finish is a special product I make using special oils, shellac, alcohol and beeswax. My design was inspired by a desire to include visual and audio stimulation. .

Description: The scope is made with fumed Mesquite (Prosopis Glandulosa). The raw wood is subjected to fumes of ammonium hydroxide 28% for 48 hours. The strong fumes mix with the tannin in the heartwood and darkens the wood. The sapwood of the mesquite is much lighter and has very little tannin therefore the final contrast between the heartwood and sapwood is very dramatic. I create the cells from acrylic and vary the front surface to cause the light to refract through the mirrors. The oil filled object cell is filled with custom lamp work and dichroic glass. I make a custom aluminum bushing to mount a ballbearing system inside the scope to provide very smooth action. The music box is an 18 note box playing "Wind Beneath My Wings". I am inspired by combining visual and audio stimulation by playing the music box and a "wow" with the image. .  

Sandra Christie Guilford, Connecticut, United States Bio: Sandra Christie is a photo restorer, metalsmith and kaleidoscope artist. She received her BFA from Parsons School of Design in NYC and studied in Paris. Sandra started creating stained glass kaleidoscopes in 1991 and silversmithing in 1998. Her work has evolved through the years as she combined her kaleidoscope glass work with her love of metalsmithing. Her kaleidoscopes are now constructed of brass, copper, and nickel. She has taught at Parsons School of Design, the Silvermine Artists Guild, Hudson Valley Silverworks. Sandra resides in Guilford CT with her awesome hubby and many furry and finned family members.

Philosophy: My fascination with kaleidoscopes comes from the realization that patterns of infinite complexity and control can be generated using 200-year-old technology and with no electronics whatsoever. Kaleidoscopes represent the perfect blend of external beauty and internal wonder. Richard Foster Bio: After many years of admiring and collecting kaleidoscopes, in 2017, I had the opportunity to take a week long class at John C. Campbell Folk School in the creation of kaleidoscopes. After a week working with Marc Tickle, I was totally committed to learning as much as I could about designing and making kaleidoscopes. I have been a wood carver for most of my life and wanted to use this skill along with working in stained glass to build unique works. In June of 2019, I attended the Brewster Society International Kaleidoscope Convention in Scottsdale, AZ, to exhibit my scopes and unveil one of my hand carved kaleidoscopes. I was also scheduled to attend the International Convention in 2020 and 2021, but they were canceled due to Covid 19. I will be exhibiting again in May of 2022 at the International Convention in St. Louis. I current exhibit my kaleidoscopes at Reflection Gallery in Chattanooga, TN and with the Association for Visual Arts in Chattanooga. In the past Hunter Museum of Art has displayed pieces.

Rodney Haug Hawley, Minnesota, United States Bio: I am a kaleidoscope artist from Hawley MN. I have been making kaleidoscopes since 1988. I originally started out making hand held teleidoscopes and kaleidoscopes but soon gravitated towards larger free standing pedestal scopes and parlour scopes. I still create the occasional hand held scope (usually as gifts) but now am doing mostly parlour scopes. The SK-9 is the most recent example of my work.
Philosophy: I have always loved the symmetry of kaleidoscope imagery. Viewing great images makes me feel good. Creating scopes that make beautiful images makes me feel even better. I don't make kaleidoscopes to make profit. I tried that in the past and found that the process, for me, sucked the joy and fun out of it. So now I create scopes because I think they should be made. I have found this to be a much more satisfying experience.

Description: The SK-8 was actually the first of the SK series. SK is supposed to stand for "simple kaleidoscope". I named it SK-8 because it happened to be approximately the eighth design of the larger scopes I had been building and I decided to use skateboard wheels for the object chamber carriage. And so the SK-8 was born. It is a large parlour scope with 6x16 inch mirrors and a 12 inch object chamber with lamp worked glass pieces. This gives a large bright image.

I love the images it gives.

Patrick Ironwood Whitwell, Tennessee, United States Bio: I am a multi-medium visionary artist and creator of the Nature of Reaction Art Studio, the curator of The Museum of Future Anthropology, and the Liquidambar Art Gallery. I flamework, copper electroform, sculpt and chemically age: glass, metal, mirrors, magnets, and contemporary objects into fictional anthropological artifacts, mysterious machines, kaleidoscopic optical devices, neo-tribal regalia, amulets, and talismans which appear to have been lost, perhaps under the sea, for hundreds of years.
Philosophy:
  Our future ancestors will find mystery in what we leave behind. They will create shrines and adorn themselves. They will honor us by wondering about the mystery of our creations and what it was that we did with our magic powers. My artwork is meant to cause an existential conundrum You can hold in Your hands. These anachronistic objects are sculpted from contemporary, often recognizable items. They appear impossibly old, seeming to have been lost for hundreds of years, perhaps under the sea. Some appear to have been mechanical, yet the purpose is unknown. My work is created using methods and tools of my own design. I electrically deposit pure Copper ions onto found objects, organic polymer resins, flameworked and vintage glass, Carbon graphite, magnetics, mirrors, and experimental Phosphorescent and photo-luminescent compounds. These Metaphysically holy materials and chemically sacred elements and compounds are deliberately chosen and constructed to tell a healthy, healing, holistic story of future renewal, the best of all possible worlds reborn, created by none other than ourselves and our future relations. I explore imaginary shipwrecks and philosophical archeological digs. These visions become formed as artifacts and mechanisms. I flamework, electroform, sculpt, and chemically age from glass, metal, mirrors, magnets, and obtuse objects into fictional and impossibly old anthropological objects. I invent mysterious machines, experimental optical devices, post-civilization tribal regalia, magical amulets, and talismans. Evoking ceremonial fetish regalia, the ornamentation of an unknown people (our future relations perhaps), these amulets and talismans are anachronistic relics of a time long after the remembered. Much of my work appears to have been mechanical, yet now the purpose is unknown. We all carry parts of the mystery. These objects are mine to share through your eyes and intellect. Life is a geological force. We make the world and reality deeper and broader by offering our creations integrity, novelty, and majesty. I contribute my art to the Earth’s legacy.

Description: All of my works are electroformed with copper making them look like they’ve been under the sea for perhaps hundreds of years and now found as an object of curiosity. This kaleidoscope is based around part of the lens assembly from the Owen Mills portrait company’s first generation of digital cameras. It has a two-mirror system with a fabric interior and an 11 point star configuration. The eyepiece is small but the image is very clear. Because of a 45° mirror in the back of the viewing chamber, the light comes in and bounces off the mirror and backlights the three-dimensional objects moving through the chamber. The chamber is fairly large compared to the mirror size so there’s a lot of variation and flow. The Silicon oil in the scope is fairly thin so the action flows quickly into a loosely attached and slightly changing symmetry.

Description: This scope is a 2 Mirror kaleidoscope with a relatively long and narrow mirror assembly. The strip is made of antique pocket watch parts. The exterior is random found objects, including figures of people and antique bicycle reflector Gems. The eyepiece is small, but the image is clear with almost 2 inches of focal range. The lighting is enhanced by a surface reflective mirror at the back of the viewing chamber. The light comes in the sides and bounces off the back mirror, so backlights and sidelights the three-dimensional objects in the chamber. The Silicon oil in this scope is thick and slows the speed of the falling objects to about 1 inch every 2 seconds, so with each turn, it takes about 4-5 seconds for the “unicorn snowflake” to appear. Once the image has settled, it will stay relatively stable until shifted or turned again, setting the gravity of all the tiny things back in motion. The interior is UV reactive and creates a different vision when used under UV or black light.

Charles Karadimos Damascus, Maryland, United States Bio: Charles Karadimos began working with stained glass in 1975 and made the transition exclusively to building glass kaleidoscopes in 1980. In the early days of the kaleidoscope renaissance, his main focus was concerned with creating crisp, vibrant, interior images and exploring and developing mirror systems with crystal clear optics that would produce rich, ever-changing patterns. And he has worked very hard towards mastering the development of the perfect kaleidoscope image. For without the image, it just isn't a kaleidoscope. Charles has designed and built thousands of kaleidoscopes, making each part of every scope by hand. There are no machined parts. Every piece -- down to the smallest shard of glass in the object chamber -- is hand worked and individually selected. All of his scopes feature a multidimensional slumped glass exterior, very nice to hold or display. Every piece is an original, signed, and numbered work of art. Charles' work is exhibited in many galleries, museums and private collections throughout the world. His work is featured in many books and publications and he is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Brewster Award for Creative Ingenuity. From November 2003 until January 2013 he served as one of the Directors of the Brewster Kaleidoscope Society, the international organization of kaleidoscope enthusiasts.

It is almost too much to carry with us every day. We wanted to create a piece that invited the viewer to reflect and experience some moments of peace and solace. This piece is created using kiln-formed glass and walnut. The optics feature a 9-point mandala image and the object cell contains flame-sculpted glass pieces.

Sheryl Koch Brasstown, North Carolina, United States Bio: Sheryl has been making kaleidoscopes since 1980. She has been a stained glass artist since the early 1970's and has combined the 2 art forms over the years to create many beautiful kaleidoscopes! Known in the kaleidoscope world for making turning wheel kaleidoscopes early on, she now likes to experiment and incorporate different mediums into her kaleidoscopes such as copper metal working, and enameling, and torch work. Working with color is her life's work and the freedom to experiment and 'play' with new things is her inspiration.

Dan Land Knoxville, Tennessee, United States Bio: I was raised in a kaleidoscope. My dad's barber shop was lined with mirrors and I could never count how many times I could see myself. I accidentally took a kaleidoscope class and immediately I was hooked; so many types of scopes, such beautiful images, infinite variety. It can't get better than this.
Philosophy: I like exploring the various ways kaleidoscopic images can be made. I like images that are highly textured, and are often themed based on the kaleidoscope. I love to showcase the beauty of kaleidoscopic playfulness with the beauty of nature. I use woods primarily from the Appalachian forests that surround my home, but also use woods from other parts of the country where I've traveled.

The body of the Way Back Machine is a modern-day dirigible commemorating the first publicly viewed powered air flight in America which occurred at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair. The kaleidoscope image is an arch representing the St. Louis arch. In addition to the glass and beads normally found in the object chamber, there are several objects related to St. Louis’s history. Description: When I was designing this kaleidoscope, I had 3 goals: 1) Develop a kaleidoscope that had a beautiful image that built on what I knew, but exceeded what I had done previously. 2) Make a kaleidoscope with a simpler turning end than what I made on a lathe 3) Make a kaleidoscope with an interchangeable object chamber. When I started making kaleidoscopes, I considered myself a box maker (I had never used a lathe in my life). As a result, my first scopes were based on boxes. For this scope I decided to return to an original design and beef it up. As a result, you will see a simple box with an image of 16 to 18 points, depending on the mirrors. This 2-mirror (mandala) kaleidoscope is made from curly ambrosia maple and walnut, and features a detachable object chamber holder that is held on with magnets. The scope comes with a "Sun Rise" object chamber, and additional object chambers can be purchased from the artist. One day at a show, a man kept looking between a few different kaleidoscopes. He finally looks up with a big grin on his face and says "they're tessellations!" I was so surprised that he knew what a tessellation was. Later, I was telling my story to a good friend who afterwards said "tessellation? Does that have something to do with Tesla cars?" While my friend wasn't geeky enough to know what I was talking about, he inspired me to create the Tesla Tessellation kaleidoscope.
Nikola Tesla was the inventor of the alternating current electric system. Ben Franklin may have discovered electricity, but we have household appliances because of Tesla. He invented many other cool things like the tesla coil (used in radios), remote controls, and a “death beam”. Elon Musk named his car company for Tesla’s electrical contributions to the world.
A Tessellation is a pattern created by repeating one or more shapes without gaps or overlaps (a.k.a., tiling of a plane). Square or hexagonal floor tiles create a "regular" tessellation. The artist Escher was famous for his "complex" figural tessellations.
Tesla Tessellations are a kaleidoscope series based on the common (regular) tessellations found in kaleidoscopes and are decorated on the outside with a branching pattern (known as Lichtenberg figures) created using high voltage electricity (ala Tesla). These patterns are literally burned into the wood and are the same patterns created in nature by lightning strikes.

Most kaleidoscopes use a triangular mirror system. If all the angles in the triangle are evenly divisible into 180, the image you see will be a tessellation. The common kaleidoscope tessellations are:
• 3 point - 60/60/60 equilateral triangle, displays a grid of triangles
• 4 point - 45/45/90 right triangle or isosceles triangle, displays a grid of squares
• 6 point - 30/60/90 right triangle, displays a grid of hexagons

A Tessellation is a pattern created by repeating one or more shapes without gaps or overlaps (a.k.a., tiling of a plane). Square or hexagonal floor tiles create a "regular" tessellation. The artist Escher was famous for his "complex" figural tessellations.
Tesla Tessellations are a kaleidoscope series based on the common (regular) tessellations found in kaleidoscopes and are decorated on the outside with a branching pattern (known as Lichtenberg figures) created using high voltage electricity (ala Tesla). These patterns are literally burned into the wood and are the same patterns created in nature by lightning strikes.

Most kaleidoscopes use a triangular mirror system. If all the angles in the triangle are evenly divisible into 180, the image you see will be a tessellation. The common kaleidoscope tessellations are:
• 3 point - 60/60/60 equilateral triangle, displays a grid of triangles
• 4 point - 45/45/90 right triangle or isosceles triangle, displays a grid of squares
• 6 point - 30/60/90 right triangle, displays a grid of hexagons

Paula Nadelstern Bronx, New York, United States Bio: Paula Nadelstern has achieved international recognition for her innovative and complex designs inspired by the bilateral symmetry of kaleidoscopic images. Honored by inclusion in the Twentieth Century’s 100 Best American Quilts, her designs were showcased in the American Folk Art Museum’s first one person exhibition highlighting the work of a contemporary quilt artist. In addition to her numerous awards, she was a recipient of fellowships from the New York Foundation for the Arts and The Bronx Council on the Arts. Paula has authored five books about her unique art quilts. She lives in the Bronx, New York on the same bock where she was born with her husband, Eric.
Philosophy: My quilts combine the symmetry and surprise of a kaleidoscope with the techniques and materials of quiltmaking. I try to free myself from a conventional sense of fabric orderliness, seeking a random quality in order to imitate the succession of chance interlinks and endless possibilities synonymous with kaleidoscopes. There are two kinds of surprises: the meticulously planned kind and the happy coincidence. Making kaleidoscope quilts allows me to synthesize elements of both, to merge control and spontaneity to spark something unexpected. Often effects more wonderful than I imagined occur, making me both the one who makes the magic and the one who is surprised.

Description: The crucial Hebrew word Chai refers to life. Used as a symbol, the word expresses the hope and prayer for life, health and prosperity. In Hebrew, each letter represents a number (as if A equals 1 and B equals 2). The word chai is spelled chet (the 8th letter) plus yud (the 10th letter), making the numerical equivalent of chai eighteen. Consequently, the number 18 is also a symbol of life. This quilt is the eighteenth in my kaleidoscopic quilt series. The asymmetrical sixteen-point image is based on the interior image of DELTA II, a limited edition kaleidoscope by Charles Karadimos of Damascas, MD.

Judith Paul Emerald Hills, California, United States Bio: Judith is a kaleidoscope collector by addiction and a kaleidoscope maker by vocation. With degrees in Art History from Brown University and The University of Chicago, as well as extensive study at the Art Institute of Chicago, she has spent her whole life in the visual arts. Her experience as a professional studio photographer, ceramicist, fabric and jewelry designer and glass artist all come into play as she designs and makes kaleidoscopes. Judith lives in Northern California and is married to her "mirror man", Tom Durden. Together they produce collector quality kaleidoscopes from the finest and most unique materials. Her kaleidoscopes have won numerous awards in international competition and are enjoyed in many homes and several museums around the world.

Jasmine Raskas Saint Louis, Missouri, United States Bio: Jasmine Raskas lives and works in St. Louis, Missouri. Her work has been shown across the region, including at Art Saint Louis, the Jacoby Art Center, 31 Art Gallery, Osage Arts Center, Manchester Arts, the Koken Art Factory, the Stone Spiral Gallery, and St. Louis Lambert International Airport. Philosophy:
 I work with paint, sculpture, and assemblage to explore patterns found in natural growth, form, and collective systems. I’m fascinated by the mathematical rules that govern the emergence of organic structures and information-based systems, including the Mandelbrot set, Lindenmayer systems, and Laplacian growth. These patterns matter to me because of how they occur across multiple levels of scale and relate to mysteries around the interconnectedness of all parts and particles. This work is informed by my education in the fields of medicine and biotechnology. I create things that are purposefully ambiguous, but simultaneously representational of objective patterns, forms, and systems found within the natural world. Throughout the process, I embody the mindset of an alien observer, stepping outside the human vantage point to occupy a timeless, scaleless, culture-less existence. I’m particularly interested in the point at which objects and systems are labeled to be intelligent, conscious, or alive, and how these distinctions relate to the 21st century’s relationship to plants and technology. My work gives animistic qualities to a variety of forms exploring the crossroads at which intelligent systems may alternatively be defined as sentient creatures.

Nedra Reed Albany, NY, United States Bio: I have been creating in stained glass for over 40 years. I specialize in kaleidoscopes and have created several prize-winning models. My horizontal wheel is unique and forms a small sculpture which is lovely to look at both outside and through the tube. More recently, I’ve been making fused glass and pottery ornaments for many of my scopes. I also love to "pull" dichroic glass using a torch and then fusing those pieces onto the sides of kaleidoscopes. The recent COVID crisis has led to new scopes. I sell mainly online marketplaces, and in Kaleidoscope stores. I love doing custom work and have made many scopes for special occasions. I love the joy that kaleidoscopes bring people and watching them look through mine.

Description: This Dragon Kaleidoscope has scales which are glass "puddles"**, and wings of red and white iridescent glass. It is a Kevel spinner type kaleidoscope with a wheel on the end which spins on a horizontal plane. The wheel has a pewter dragon, a pewter castle and a crystal ball which swings and adds motion to the image. There is also second small wheel that turns on the first wheel.
**The glass puddles were created by this artist by layering scrap glass and fusing it. That layered piece was then broken into smaller pieces. Those pieces were then fired to become puddles.

Description: This "Dragon Guarding Tower" 2 Marble Kaleidoscope has a fused glass dragon on one side, a tower created using decorative soldering on its second side and a spare marble and wire and a pewter crown and brass knight armor on its third side. It has a 3- mirror tapered system. The dragon is created using "puddles"** for its scales and has dichroic feet, horns and a tail tip.
**The glass puddles were created by this artist by layering scrap glass and fusing it. That layered piece was then broken into smaller pieces. Those pieces were then fired to become puddles.

Description: This oil wand kaleidoscope has a beautiful black body with dichroic "squiggles" *** fused into its sides and top. It is a beautiful scope to display and look through. This oil kaleidoscope provides a cascade of color. It is often described as being like fireworks. You turn the scope so that the color is at the top of the tube. The colored oil and small metallic pieces flow down through the tube and “burst” in front of the mirrors within the scope. It is just fantastic!!. The pictures above are actual views through this scope. However, still pictures do not capture the movement effect. This scope has gold tiny beads and metallic moons and stars. The scope has a beautiful base. It is made of black and white swirly glass.

Description: This kaleidoscope was created from oyster shells, found on the beach. Two shells were cut and pieced together to form each of the three sides. The shells have barnacles, shells and coral to form wonderful textures. Some shells have been stripped by the sea of the outer layer to reveal the iridescent abalone inner shell. The scope also honors the sea with sea glass, a shark's tooth and other shells. Images are created by turning the wheel on the end in a horizontal plane. The wheel has a shell, a lighthouse, a naval compass and a moving crystal on it.

Description: This kaleidoscope is one of my "theme" series of scopes. It is a smaller than usual and easy to handle with a magnified eye piece to enhance the image. This scope features gems, semi-prescious stones and minerals. There is a wire-wrapped piece of crazy lace agate on one side and a piece of rhodonite on the other. Images are formed by turning the wheel on a horizontal plane. The wheel has pieces of turquoise, red coral, tigers eye and quartz on it.

Mark & Carol Reynolds Austin, Texas, United States Bio: In 1974 Mark migrated from Illinois, where he was born, to Austin, TX to attend the University of Texas majoring in English Literature. He and his brother Peach supplemented their income by making handmade kaleidoscopes and selling them on " the drag". After completing his education, Mark and Peach went into scope making full time. As pioneers in a kind of kaleidoscope renaissance, they built a by-the-seat-of-your-pants business designing hand-made scopes that included a camerascope, electroscope, and various hand painted and wood styles. Earlier models had an endearing quality, but with the discovery of front surface mirrors, image clarity became the benchmark for the future of scope appreciation. Art shows, then in their infancy, were the largest market for their work, along with galleries and gift catalogs worldwide. In the late 80's Peach gravitated toward a real job in Real Estate, while Mark continued on in the world of kaleidoscopes and light sculptures under the banner of "Kaleidovisions". Fortunately for Mark, Carol, his soon-to-be-wife, swept into action as artist partner. Daughter to a decorated flight navigator and Air Force Mom, Carol has been the "navigator" for the business ever since. Together they continue to design, build and show their high quality pieces at shows and galleries all across the country.
Philosophy:
  In all our efforts our goal is to create art where form follows function. We begin each design by experimenting with mirrors that can be cut and configured to create an infinite number of unique kaleidoscopic illusions...all variations of triangles and squares. Then, we design a wood "delivery system". In each case, the wood on the outside reflects the mirror assembly inside. To make our scopes interactive, we build fluid filled viewing chambers that contain our flame worked glass, dichroic glass, shells and anything that helps to make a mesmerizing image. Success for us is when folks are attracted to our wood sculptures and then are amazed when they look inside.

Description: This tapered parlor kaleidoscope is mounted on a southwestern Wyoming petrified wood log. This log is millions of years old. It was formed by the petrification of primeval trees. The tapered kaleidoscope produces a three dimensional mandala provide by the three rotating wheels at the end. The kaleidoscope can be used by viewing on a table. It can also be removed from the mounting and used elsewhere The log itself is “as found” with exception of the hole noted into the top to mount the kaleidoscope. The log is wrapped by a stained glass and wire simulated rose vine to give it a natural appearance. In mythology, petrified wood is regarded as an object with divine power and a symbol of man’s connection to the natural world. Others believe that petrified wood stabilizes health and the body’s defenses, generating calm and encourages contentment.

Snake Skin Agate Kaleidoscope Price: $425

Description: This kaleidoscope is made from two slabs of snake skin agate and highlighted with semi-precious beads on the top. Each stone slab has its own character as it was formed by nature, this stone kaleidoscope is therefore truly unique. The agate slabs were cut from a larger agate stone using a diamond blade. Lapidary techniques were used to prepare the slabs for use in the kaleidoscope. The agate slabs are about 1/4 inches thick. This in addition to the agate beads along the top of the kaleidoscope makes it heavier than the average kaleidoscope hence stained glass was used on the bottom to keep the weight down. Agate is believed by many to have magical powers enabling the user choose between true friends and false one. It is said to avert storms and lightning, protect children from danger, bring prosperity and prevent miscarriages.

Porcelain Jasper Kaleidoscope Price: $425

Description: This kaleidoscope is formed from two slabs of porcelain jasper stone slabs. This particular piece of porcelain jasper shows wonderful color variations. Each side is unique. The top is highlighted with sparkling amber colored beads. These porcelain jasper slabs were selected for use because of their unique stripes making this kaleidoscope a “one of a kind” display. Each slab of this jasper was sliced from a larger stone using a diamond blade. Lapidary techniques were used to prepare the stone for use in the kaleidoscope. Because this stone slab is approximately 1/4 inch thick stained glass was used for the bottom side to limit the weight of the kaleidoscope. In the Middle Ages jasper was regarded as the warrior’s stone, symbolizing willpower. It is linked to Aries and Virgo .

Philosophy:
 I live and work in a remote and quiet place, in a village in the Mecklenburg Province near the German Baltic Sea coast. The surrounding nature and the vastness of its landscape have an essential influence on my abstract picture compositions. After my studies of painting in Dresden and a subsequent period of studies in Berlin, I now, living in the countryside, enjoy tranquility and a feeling of getting back to essentials. A prerequisite for creation of my powerful pictures. Despite their complexity these are artworks reduced to the essentials. I put an emphasis on, and feel very strongly about, the aspect that all of my pictures reflect a positive sentiment and give pleasure to those viewing them. At the same time, though, they convey more complex contents on a deeper level that cannot be described by means of language.

David Sugich Santa Barbra, Califnoria, United States Bio: Santa Barbara, California based artist David Sugich creates a series of wonderful kaleidoscopes with a wonderful assortment of colors and textures of stained glass fitted with colorful bead-filled wands that help create a beautiful expression of color with every turn.
Philosophy: My kaleidoscopes are not your typical everyday kaleidoscopes. I make a variety of 2-, 3-, and 4-mirror kaleidoscopes which are 2, 2.5, and 3-dimensional in nature. I use domestic, U.S. made, colored glass as the decorative exteriors, and dynamically moving, sparkling oil for the object chambers at the end of the mirror systems.

Description: Wizards and Dragons gets its name from the dragons and wizards inside the mirror chamber and is based on David's Nova series of kaleidoscopes. The interior of this three sided kaleidoscope appears to be larger than the exterior. The dragons appear to be flying to the spiky orb created by the large tapered mirror system. Light entering from one side alters the image.

Mike & Donna Thibodeau Saint Charles, Missouri, United States Bio: We began making kaleidoscopes in 1994. Our first product was a kaleidoscope kit that we marketed to Junior Achievement Companies to be used as a product the kids manufactured and then sold. We were both JA advisors and though the kit was a great project for the kids, it didn’t provide us with much of a challenge or creative outlet. We began making different kinds of scopes; creating different body styles and discovering different ways to create the images. We learned how to put together boards to create inlay to use in some of our scope bodies. As we learned more about kaleidoscopes, we became involved in the Brewster Kaleidoscope Society, a group of kaleidoscope artists, collectors, and shop owners. This gave us the opportunity to meet many of the people in the kaleidoscope community where we formed connections that both helped us to grow as artists, and to sell our scopes in shops around the country.
Philosophy:
 We believe that kaleidoscopes are "two-in-one" pieces of art. The body of the kaleidoscope is a beautiful piece of art that can be displayed but once it is picked up and looked through, the images created can be mesmerizing.

Laura Wilde Daly City, California, United States Bio: Born and raised in Fresno, Wilde then attended Santa Clara University, where she received a Bachelor in Fine Arts. After that she moved to San Francisco and pursued a career in printing and graphics. Now retired, she lives in Daly City and continues with kaleidoscoping and graphics.
Philosophy:
  I love the colorful individualism, chaos, and organization of kaleidoscopes as they seem to echo the reality of life.

Description: An original Rondel was basically a simplified version of this. I so liked it I decided to upgrade it to the Trio. The scopes measure 7" x 3" (including the cell). There are three different mirror systems - 2 2-mirror systems, 4-point and 5-point, and a three mirror. The cells are sealed, contain oil, and move independently. Exterior and interior colors match. .

Description: I find gingko leaves to be particularly beautiful. When I saw the stand I immediately decided to create a scope featuring gingkoes. The scope itself is 4 ¼” x 1 ¾”. It has a 2-mirror, 4-point system and a dry cell. The scope is a one-piece item, as the cell is permanently attached to the body. Exterior and interior colors match.

Description: Bright colors of a mixed spring bouquet are beautiful! Hence the design of this scope. It moves independently. The mirror system is 2-point, 4-point. Exterior and interior colors match. .

Description: The iris is my favorite flower. Seeing this lovely tea light holder and knowing I had a number of iris images, I created this scope. The scope itself is 4 ¼” x 1 ¾”, and the mirror system is a 2-mirror, 4-point. The cell is attached to the body and therefore cannot be turned independently. Exterior and interior colors match.

Philosophy:
  I make objects of delight from reclaimed and up-cycled musical instrument parts to help people celebrate their personal connections to music. I am inspired by the stories these materials have to tell. Craftspeople shaped them; musicians dreamed with them; listeners cherished those dreams. Then I turn them into kaleidoscopes, and art for your ear becomes art for your home. Kaleidoscopes fall right at the overlapping center of the Venn diagram of things that fascinate and inspire me: Art, Music, Science, Rhythm, Spirit, Play, Magic, Joy. My process thrives on improvisation. In my Los Angeles studio, I experiment with different, often unexpected combinations to discover how each kaleidoscope’s form will enhance its function.

Description: This one-of-a-kind kaleidoscope uses the classic black and silver palette of the clarinet as its inspiration. The result is a piece of Art Deco Steampunk. The body and stand are made from reclaimed clarinet parts. A frog from a broken violin bow connects the scope body to its object cell. Most elements in the object cell are monochromatic; many are music-related. The 3-mirror system creates dazzling, ever-changing imagery as the viewer turns the object cell. .  

Koji Yamami Shibuya-ku, Tokyo, Japan Bio: I have been making Kaleidoscopes about 30years. I have a Kaleidoscope making school in Tokyo. I became a member of Brewster Kaleidoscope Society in 1995 and my first convention was 1996 in Corning. I have won 8 People' s Choice Award at BKS convention. I have won a Juror Award at Strathmore Hall Exhibition in 2016 I have gotten a Cozette Award in 2019. I am an international board member of BKS.
Philosophy: I have been making kaleidoscopes since 1992. I use stained glass as one of the major materials for making my kaleidoscopes. I own my private kaleidoscope making school in Tokyo. I have formed a group called " ART KALEIDOSCOPE JAPAN" to promote awareness of Art Kaleidoscopes to the public.

Description: This scope named ”SNOW QUEEN”. I have got inspirations from my favorite Disney movie “Frozen”. I designed it from the image of Snow, Ice, Queen, so I designed it with white and blue stained glass and it shaped like a rock of a ice or a ice castle and a movie character Elsa’s dress. Inside image is like Explosion Ices. Snow Queen receive one of the "Peoples Choice" awards in the 2020 Brewster Kaleidoscope Society virtual unveiling.
