Attendees will create an extremely large 36 point mandala. Your choice of oil or dry cell, or both using a split cell. A glass rod at the center of the mandala can be any color and creates a 3-D quality in the image. This scope will be tailored to your own color preferences. Several exterior colors will be offered.

The Disco Dandelion is exclusively designed for the 2019 Kaleidoscope Expo. The image in this teleidoscope is made from 4 tapered reflective surfaces including dichroic mirror. Think of a psychedelic dandelion, it looks like that! It is a dynamic image and will change dramatically as it enters differing light sources and intensities, as can be seen in the photos taken through the same scope. Students will complete their scope with personalized touches such as hand painted papers for the scope body, or chosen from a large selection of beautiful paper. Students will be guided through the assembly of precision, precut components. Students will have an opportunity to cut mirror themselves if they wish to have the experience.

I’ve been making a living at making kaleidoscopes for the past 35 years and I’ve learned a thing or two. In my class you will make the “Pinnacle” kaleidoscope, so named because optically, this is one of the best scopes I’ve produced, and in the process you’ll learn my technique for making a flawless two mirror assembly. You will also learn how to construct an acrylic liquid cell, using bits and pieces of your own choosing. The result will be one of the best two mirror, hand-held scopes you will ever look into. Laura Wilde’s class produces a 7 3/4″ tall x 3″ wide x 2″ deep wooden scope with a 2-mirror system and dry cell. You may cut your own mirror, or use those she supplies already cut. The bodies are stained in dark wood, light (pickled) wood, or green, and a number of exterior adornments are provided, as is a wide variety of objects to fill the chamber. Cost is $100; add’l cells are $10 each as the bottom is magnetized and can be removed to change cells.

Randy Knapp “Fluid Filled Object Cells” (Demonstration)

Randy Knapp will demonstrate the ins and outs of how to build your own fluid filled object cell. Drawing from his 30 years of experience as a kaleidoscope artist, Randy will demonstrate through video and live talk will show the steps of how he makes a basic object cell made from a piece of acrylic tubing. For all you “hard core” junkies Randy will share the secrets of building an object cell from an acrylic sheet. This demo includes how to glue up an object cell, how to fill it, how to seal it, how to trim off the excess, and how to polish the exterior. A detailed handout with all the basic information will be included.

Randy Knapp will take you through the magic of Kaleidoscope optics. He will cover the basic 2 and 3 mirror systems used in most modern kaleidoscopes. Learn how to cut mirrors, the jigs he uses to put them together, some of the consideration that come into play, and how to install them into the kaleidoscope body. The basic understanding of how a magnification lens works will also be addressed. The demo will end with an open discussion on kaleidoscope designs.

A talk and demonstration about the design process that created the Parasol Kaleidoscope series. An explanation on how to use negative space to make images dramatically stand out. To illustrate this concept Steven will demonstrate and assemble a Parasol Kaleidoscope mirror system.
