Windseye Kaleidoscopes Doug Johnson / Windseye

This page relates to the early kaleidoscope artist Doug Johnson who along with his wife Dottie created kaleidoscopes under the studio name Windseye.  They ran a high quality arts and crafts shop in Florida.  Cozy Baker reports he was one of the first artists to use front surface mirrors.  The first to use clear and beveled glass for the bodies of the scope and the first to create a marble scope using high quality latticino marbles and the first binocular kaleidoscope.  He is generally associated with various kaleidoscopes made of glass and brass but as you can see from the pictures in the gallery that show his display at an undated show, there were other kaleidoscopes as well, often made from found objects.  Cozy Baker reports he started making kaleidoscopes in 1978.  He appears in the 1999 book “Kaleidoscopes, Wonder of Wonders” but does not appear in the 2002 book “Kaleidoscope Artistry” and he does not appear at all in the 2005 “The Kaleidoscope Collectors Guide”.
