I create kaleidoscopes in collaboration with other artists who create contemporary handmade marbles. My approach to kaleidoscope making starts with observing the marble for which I plan to design a kaleidoscope in various mirror systems in search for the most awe-inducing imagery. I then create a kaleidoscope design inspired by those observations. The marble utilized in this kaleidoscope was made by Filip Vogelpohl of Boise Art Glass and is called a “Bouquet Marble”.
“Lionfish vs. Coral Reef” is a two sided kaleidoscope with the imagery of a majestic lionfish on one side and a colorful and highly textured coral reef on the other. I enjoy using duality in my artwork to create a story. The lionfish and the coral reef are both exotic and as aesthetically complex as the imagery created by the kaleidoscope, yet at odds with each other in the natural world.
